Reading a Cycle Before It Turns

The signals that precede a shift in capital appetite usually surface long before the headlines do.

Capital cycles rarely turn on a single data release. By the time a shift is visible in the headlines, the positions that move first have usually already been taken.

The more reliable signals are quieter: financing terms tightening before rates move, allocation rotating inside institutional portfolios, and a widening gap between public and private valuations for comparable assets.

The useful question is rarely 'where are we in the cycle' — it is what decision is being delayed while waiting for a certainty that isn't coming. Most allocation that looks well-timed in hindsight was made slightly before it felt comfortable.
